課程目標   Learning Objectives
This survey course covers formal and technical aspects of poetry, major narrative and lyric subgenres, and stylistic problems related to tone. We will not discuss long narrative poems, nor will we talk about dramatic verse. After looking at formal and generic approaches, we consider some major thematic concerns in poetry and poetry as a medium for philosophical ideas before turning to period, gender, and ethnicity. The reading burden is, technically-speaking, light—about three poems a week for analysis (though lots of others as supplemental work that you can pursue on your own or write about). The focus is on intensive examination of short to medium-length verse, virtually all of which was written in English.
