課程目標   Learning Objectives
Modernism is an umbrella term that applies to a range of literary forms and social developments, often associated with self-conscious experimentation. Is Modernism a unified concept? This question will frequently arise over the course of the semester, but in any case, during our timeframe, several major themes and preoccupations may be isolated. We will examine ideas like decadence, Aestheticism, relativism, anarchism, nihilism, psychoanalysis, the body, the role of the artist, anomie and escapism, abstraction; we will also slow down to look at a few major cultural figures like Nietzsche and Freud, as well as historical and social contexts like World War I, the rise of fascism, and the shifting sensibilities in the arts.
