課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
This course is a general overview of Western film in English, with an emphasis on popular Hollywood films. It opens with an investigation of how the looking process operates in film and how it differs from the reading of literary texts. We follow this with an examination of narrative and formal techniques, historical developments in early film, film experiments, and then genre studies. We move next to style, special categories like the cult film, the documentary, and end with some more theoretical concerns like feminism and auteur theory. By taking this course, you are basically committing yourself to watching a film a week; the reading is mostly optional, but the film-viewing is not—we will not watch these movies during the class time.
