課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
In this survey we trace the development of Western European literature from the High Middle Ages to the end of the Classical period and the beginnings of Romanticism (the second semester extends this timeline to 1960). Developments in history and the arts, though of less importance, will also be part of most classes. The focus is canonical, basically great figures, and a range of genres, including the chivalric romance, epic, comedy, historical narratives, biography, legend, prose narratives, and the philosophical story. Poetry will have a very limited function in this course since we are reading continental authors exclusively. Note: We will only read excerpts of longer works; for detailed information about weekly readings, see the worksheets uploaded into e-course or write to me directly.
