課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
Teach students to write various types of articles. Also, to make their writings interesting and readable. Thus this course gives practical experience in writing across several forms and genres. While many people are used to one or two of them, dabbling with others can equip them with useful techniques. Although the focus is on the so-called literature, this course also supplements other courses offered by this department, such as Translation, Advertisements in English, and Journalistic English. (Rather than generally building upon students’ grasp of paragraph writing and extending into essay writing, this course works to enable them to write various types of papers in good English though the emphasis remains very much more on the students’ writing skill than on their possible future careers. Through creative reading and critical thinking, this course helps cultivate students’ imagination, logical thinking, and logical arrangements of their essays. The selections of texts, while enlarging their views on the contemporary world, both improve students’ English through their close readings of texts and through their subsequent organization of their critical writings. In the process the crucial aspects of English composition are dealt with. Documentation and format form part of the content as well. Thus students are encouraged to do essay writing by working on, developing and supporting a central thesis, organizing an outline, writing introductions and conclusions, and understanding the strategies for essay writing. For this course, students are encouraged to revise their writings independently. The instructor marks the mistakes in students’ writings, and the students are required to discover and publish the corrections. As group discussions help students evade others’ mistakes, this practice also plays a significant role.
