課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
|
This course provides a survey of what is known about language and also of the methods employed by linguists in arriving at that knowledge. Linguistics is a relatively new field of scientific study of language. We will try to take a critical view of the effectiveness of the descriptions, the analyses, and the claims made, by measuring them against your own intuitions about how your language works. We hope you will learn both the internal structure of language (its form) and the varied uses of language in human life (its function), and also find the answers to your questions about language. We hope you can learn how to apply the linguistics theory into practice in life.

***Attendance is mandatory. You are responsible for attending every class meeting. Each hour (Two hours) of absence will result in a 0.5 (1)-point penalty of the participation grades. If you are late for 10 minutes, you will be considered absent. The three situations: 6 leaves / 1 unexcused absence and 3 leaves / 2 unexcused absences will be equal to losing the chance of the final exam. If you are absent for the group presentation, you will be given a grade of zero.
Requirements:
1. The assigned text should be read before class.
2. Homework should be done at home and then you may pose questions to be answered in class.
3. Group discussion with personal presentation will be done in class.
4. No cheating is allowed in this course.
5. Some homework, discussion tasks or quizzes will be done in class in order to get the grades of class participation part.
6. From the second week on, you will need to sit on a fixed place.
7. No late work. Handouts fee: $20.
8. Everyone needs a textbook for the course. If you forget to bring one, you will lose one total grade of the course each time.
