課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
This course provides a survey of what is known about language and also of the methods employed by linguists in arriving at that knowledge. Linguistics is a relatively new field of scientific study of language. We will try to take a critical view of the effectiveness of the descriptions, the analyses, and the claims made, by measuring them against your own intuitions about how your language works. We hope you will learn both the internal structure of language (its form) and the varied uses of language in human life (its function), and also find the answers to your questions about language.

***Attendance is mandatory. You are responsible for attending every class meeting. Each hour of absence will result in a 1-point penalty. If you are late for 10 minutes, you will be considered absent. The three situations: 6 leaves / 1 unexcused absence and 3 leaves / 2 unexcused absences will be equal to losing the chance of the final exam. If you are absent for the group presentation, you will be given a grade of zero. Requirements: 1. The assigned text should be read before class. 2. Homework should be done at home and then you may pose questions to be answered in class. 3. Group discussion with personal presentation will be done in class. 4. No cheating is allowed in this course. 5. Each person needs to answer or ask Q voluntarily for 5 times in English (0.6 point for each, from the 6th time on, 0.2 point for each) in order to get the 15 points for the performance on assignments, discussion and reports. Those who attend certain activities related to English will be given extra points. 6. From the second week on, you will need to sit on a fixed place. 7. No late work. Handouts fee: $50. Guidelines of doing the paper: The topic of the paper will be to analyze distribution of the linguistic patterns (elements) in one English song, one Chinese song, and two commercial advertisements (one in English and the other in Chinese). You can find the materials on TV or the Internet. Draw the tree diagram of three sentences, and do the discourse analysis of the text. Apply the morphemes, semantics, pragmatics, rhetoric and related theory learned in the course in the analytic process. Choose four members in a group. At least five-page long, including your reaction for the cooperative process of doing the analysis, the lyrics of the songs and the text of the commercials. What have you learned? Put them into a disc. Hand in the disc and the paper copy of your work.
