課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
This course provides students with a sound, basic coverage of most topics dealt with in sociolinguistics. The materials in the courses are designed to encourage further discussion and research. A language is what the members of a particular society speak. The knowledge that speakers have or speak is abstract, and contains rules and principles and saying and doing things with sounds, words, and sentences. We will learn the possibilities the language offers and what is impossible. Sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationships between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and of how languages function in communication; the equivalent goal in the sociology of language is trying to discover how social structure can be better understood through the study of language, e.g., how certain linguistic features serve to characterize particular social arrangements. It can be divided into two types: micro- sociolinguistics investigates how social structure influences they way people talk and how language varieties and patterns of use correlate with social attributes such as class, sex, and age. Macro-sociolinguistics studies what societies do with their languages, that is, attitudes and attachments that account for the functional distribution of speech forms in society, language shift, maintenance, and replacement, the delimitation and interaction of speech communities.

成績評量方式補充說明

***Attendance is mandatory. You are responsible for attending every class meeting. Each hour of absence will result in a 1-point penalty. If you are late for 10 minutes, you will be considered absent. The three situations: 6 leaves / 1 unexcused absence and 3 leaves / 2 unexcused absences will be equal to losing the chance of the final exam. If you are absent for the group presentation, you will be given a grade of zero. Requirements: 1. The assigned text should be read before class. 2. Homework should be done at home, revised and then you may pose questions to be answered in class. Hand in the revised work in the following week. 3. Group discussion with personal presentation will be done in class. 4. No cheating is allowed in this course. 5. Each person needs to answer or ask Q voluntarily for 10 times in English (0.6 point for each, from the 5th time on, 0.2 point for each) in order to get the 15 points for the performance on assignments, discussion and reports. Those who attend certain activities related to English will be given extra points. 6. From the second week on, you will need to sit on a fixed place. 7. No late work. Handouts fee: $50.
