課程目標   Learning Objectives
This course is basically a literature course. It has little to do with teaching English. As it is, classics are used in class, while, if possible, modern works—such as Joy Kogawa’s Naomi’s Road and Naomi’s Tree—will also be introduced. J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye will help us better know the difficulties for teenagers to accept the language games in society, while Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol focuses our attention on the value of children's naive beliefs and reliance on imagination. We may also touch on some children’s favorite poems. As students here are undergraduates, they are encouraged not only to understand the literal meanings of each work discussed in class but also to analyze the work. With teacher’s guidance in class, students learn to write a short paper at the end of the semester.
