課程目標   Learning Objectives
This course is designed to introduce students to the practice of oral interpretation. Students will first be introduced to the basic skills involved in consecutive interpretation and will be expected to gradually develop the ability to interpret accurately and fluently chunks of articles or speeches (1 to 3 minute long) from English to Chinese and vice versa. Before actual practices in consecutive interpretation begin, students will first complete the following exercises:

(1) Summarizing and extracting gist
(2) Paraphrasing and reformulating
(3) Recall
(4) Sight Translation
(5) Short consecutive interpretation without notes
(6) Note-taking
(7) Number conversion

As part of the course requirement and as a way to help students develop skills that are needed for interpreting, students are expected to work in pairs and individually for interpretation practice after class on a regular basis. A total of four
evaluation/reflection assignments should be handed in over the course of the semester.
