課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
|
In this course we survey a range of popular cultural subjects in various media: print culture, comics, animation, film, television, advertising images, and oral tradition. Our purpose is to think about how and why these forms are produced, that is, beyond their entertainment value. Relevant questions will be: What distinguishes popular culture from other forms (canonical, dominant, sub-, counter-)? Who is the audience of these works? How do the works or their contents function symbolically? What do they indicate about the readers/viewers and wider culture that consume them (and can they function in other cultural settings)? What historical conditions are necessary for them to appear? Who benefits (or loses) by these cultural forms? Do some of them have a disruptive influence on their users and why? And many, many more questions of this type.
