課程目標   Learning Objectives
This general survey follows major developments in continental European prose, and to a lesser extent, drama, from the late Middle Ages to the present. Because the subject area is very large and time is limited, we must restrict our attention to famous works and authors from the major artistic/historical periods. In several cases, because of limited time, we will read an excerpt from a longer work. Because the works were not written in English and are therefore translations, we will not be concerned with poetry. This course is completely canonical in content, covering authors like Dante, Cervantes, Racine, and Kafka; there will be no popular culture component (with the possible exception of an early film); there will only be a limited discussion of history. Each week, however, we will look at a series of images (or less commonly, musical selections) associated with the period from which the literary selection comes. Because the course extends to the present, it will include film—a classical Expressionist film, a Surrealist film, and more recently, a modern experimental Czech filmmaker. For detailed information about content, see the worksheets for the class uploaded into e-course.
