課程目標   Learning Objectives
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a modern tool for architectural history, urban history, settlement studies, and cultural heritage surveys. Through GIS, research can more efficiently integrate and visualize (e.g., infographics) various data related to land, buildings, space, and human activities from a spatial perspective. Additionally, GIS enables more active collaboration, integration, and dialogue with other fields such as regional geography, historical research, social sciences, demographics, urban planning and governance, disaster prevention, and ecology.

The goal of this course is to train students in the practical application of GIS. The course is divided into three parts: basic structure, software instruction, and practical application. First, understanding the "basic structure" of GIS helps students grasp the internal relationships between various functions and operations. Next, "software instruction" uses examples from architectural history, settlement studies, and cultural heritage surveys to progressively explain the functionalities and their appropriate use. Finally, in the "practical application" segment, students will apply GIS to designated or self-chosen research topics, allowing them to practice operation and consider how GIS can be applied to different aspects of diverse research topics.

The course aims to provide students with a fundamental yet solid understanding of GIS concepts and operations, with an emphasis on relating GIS applications to research topics. Additionally, the course content includes a significant focus on the urban spatial history of Tainan, reflecting the close connection between the course and everyday life contexts.
