課程目標 Learning Objectives

Fantasy and horror comprise a significant body of literary works, film, and other media (comics, video and role-playing games, cosplay events, theme parks, etc.). Although fantasy literature and supernatural horror fiction have been around for a considerable time, the focus of this course is the period from 1870 to 1980, primarily in the English-speaking world. Two major threads determine the course structure and content: the escape from something (horror) and the escape to something (fantasy). Each week features a reading/viewing assignment, which will be supplemented with a second, optional text/film and an optional critical essay taken from the large body of scholarship on these subjects. The obligation is the primary reading/viewing; the other material is up to you. The course involves a mixture of canonical authors, popular authors, and children’s/young adult authors. Some works are offered either in their original or graphic adaptations, meaning that you will have a choice between engaging the literary form or the graphic adaptation.
