課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
In this introduction to Western Drama we will examine major periods and genres of theater beginning with the Ancient Greco-Roman world and ending with late 20th century Europe. Genres include Ancient tragedy, the Baroque comedy of manners, the problem play, tragicomedy, Modernist experimentation, including Expressionism, Existentialism, and Absurdism. This course is mostly text-based; we give some brief attention to the dramatic theories of Aristotle, Freytag, and Szondi. I will supply historical contexts, but this is not a theory course, nor do we discuss acting technique. The primary reading is supplemented by extra plays from the same period/in the same genre, and by critical essays—all of this extra material is optional.
