課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
This course is a general survey (1919-2010) of English-language film, with an emphasis on popular Hollywood movies. We start by questioning the looking process (What does it mean to watch a film?). We then examine narrative and formal techniques, experimentation, and genre (the western, in this case). Subsequently, we cover style (melodrama and film noir), and some special categories like the cult film, the documentary, and gender identity. By taking this course, you are committing yourself to watching a movie a week. I offer some background reading each week, but none of it is required.
