課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
|
This course is a broad overview of the detective fiction genre from its beginnings in Edgar Allan Poe. The syllabus is organized by subgenre: the Classical analytic tale, the scientific and inverted tale, the Golden Age clue-puzzle, the hard-boiled (pulp) story, procedurals, and the metaphysical tale. In addition to these divisions, we will examine a couple of other thematic or formal types: the detective-magician, the historical detective tale, and parody. The focus for each week is a reading selection or film; supplementary texts are provided for those who want to pursue the basic types in more depth. Each week, I also suggest a critical response linked to the main reading/viewing; these critical essays are optional, and I will summarize their contents in class.
