課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
|
This course is a general overview of Western film in English, with an emphasis on popular Hollywood movies—the time range is 1919 to 2010. We start with an investigation of the looking process itself and how it differs from reading of literary texts. We then examine narrative and formal techniques, historical developments in early film, film experiments, and then genre studies. Subsequently, we cover style, special categories like the cult film, the documentary, and end with some more theoretical concerns like feminism and auteur theory. By taking this course, you are basically committing yourself to watching a movie a week; the reading is optional, but the film-viewing is not—we will not watch these movies during class time.
