課程目標 Learning Objectives
|
We focus on literature and not on language-learning in this class. Classics are used in class, while, if possible, some minor poems will also be covered. J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye helps us better know the difficulties for teenagers to accept the language games in society, while Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, claimed by many to be the greatest children's book of all time, help us understand children's beliefs and imagination, although we'll also discuss many features of the story from an adult's point of view. For example, Alice can be a feminist. What about the use of language in this story? As students here are undergraduates, they are encouraged not only to understand the literal meanings of each work discussed in class but also to analyze the works. With the teacher’s guidance in class, students also learn to write a short paper at the end of the semester.
I also hope that students can learn to write poems during this semester, but probably we will only have one week for this practice.

成績評量方式補充說明
|
Am thinking of the possibility of replacing the final academic paper with a short story, in which Phoebe, Holden's sister, serves as the narrator, who retells Holden's life and offers her judgement. In her retelling, also mention a debate between herself and her father (or a family debate, a debate between those two teachers of Holden?) over Holden's problem. I hope you will have a better grasp of the novel this way.
