課程目標   Learning Objectives
This course is, chronologically-speaking, a continuation of the first semester, taking us through Romanticism to Naturalism and then into the confusion of the early twentieth century, and ending with the post-WWII era. The endpoint is in the 1990s. Although it picks up where the previous course left off historically, the first course is not necessary to understanding the second and they can be taken out of sequence. Paralleling major literary movements, we will discuss the various historical and cultural changes occurring in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the fallout from the Enlightenment and French Revolution, industrialization and the triumph of bourgeois capitalism, and the conflicts of the early 20th century and the accompanying political developments. As usual, the arts will be a constant though limited feature of most classes, especially painting. Because film is created in this era, it will also be part of this course, represented in two weeks.
