課程目標   Learning Objectives
The course picks up where English Literature III leaves off at the end of the nineteenth century, continuing into the 2000s. Fortunately, the twentieth century offers quite a variety of genres, including popular culture, and therefore I think this course will feel more varied, and of course, up-to-date than earlier parts of the series. In addition to certain traditional genres like short stories, drama, and poetry, we’ll also engage film, television, and works on the more popular end of the scale. These works will be placed in historical context, and about half of the class meetings will devote some time to the discussion of historical events. To help with this, I will give you some books on British history (and recommended reading from these), and there will be some historical elements on tests two and four; however, this historical material will be covered in class, and you will be responsible only for the terms/ideas/events that we discuss. Most of the mark takes the form of two topic-based examinations.
