English Literature II takes the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as its focus, which, unfortunately is a difficult period, with, from our point of view, weird genres and obsessions. Anyway, we’ll do the best we can with it by reading a range of texts: short narratives, poetry (lyric, epic, and mock epic), essays (some serious, some satirical), a play. These works will be placed in historical context, and about half of the weeks will involve some discussion of historical events. To help with this, I will give you some books on British history (and recommended reading from these), and there will be some historical questions on tests two and four; however, this historical material and its keywords will be covered in class, and you will be responsible only for the terms/ideas/events that we discuss. Most of the mark takes the form of two topic-based examinations.
