This course is an introduction to western literary genres, beginning with oral tradition primarily from the Ancient World and the Middle Ages. The genres in this part of the class include fables, myths, epic, parable, legend, the romance, and fairy tales. Subsequently, we study texts from the Modern period, mostly short stories and poetry. An important aim is to develop a working vocabulary of literary terms with the goal of applying them to our texts and to literature generally. Social, historical, and cultural contexts will also be discussed as background to our texts, including general overviews of the ancient, medieval, and modern periods and their major artistic contributions to western civilization. We will also begin to examine several themes or topoi. This course is foundational; its content is useful for later literature and popular culture courses, and for the general development of critical thinking ability: the analytic, evaluative, genealogical, and synthetic capacities. For detailed information about content, see the worksheets for the class uploaded into e-course.
